Flea and Tick Medication

Flea and Tick Medication

Flea and tick medication facts:

Using flea and tick medication is a great way to keep your pet comfortable and healthy, untreated fleas and ticks can lead to serious illness and make your house uninhabitable, when the weather turns warmer fleas and ticks emerge in a very high number. And these pests are very dangerous to the health of people as well as pets.

Using flea and tick medication is very important for all pet owners for indoor or outdoor pets all year long, spring and summer are not the only seasons when flea and ticks are active.

Tick

Fleas Facts

These little vampires feed on blood, which makes dogs and cats as appealing to them as filet mignon. After they burrow into your pet’s fur and have their fill, they poop it out in the form of little brown flecks. Then they are in the mood to mate, after which time females lay eggs (one flea can produce as many as 2,000 in her lifetime) and the cycle continues until you act with treatment to interrupt it.

Signs of a severe flea infestation include bumps, a rash, hair loss around the base of the tail, and an unpleasant odor.

Ticks Facts

Ticks have eight legs and initially start off head-of-a-pin small, so they are particularly hard to find on dogs with thick fur. As they feed, their belly expands and becomes engorged with blood.

It is not easy to tell at first if a tick has bitten you or your pet. When one latches on, it spits out a local anesthetic, so the victim does not feel it. Then it sucks the host’s blood.

How can we Help?

Nohl Ranch Animal Hospital recommends an annual fecal test to screen for intestinal parasites and an annual blood test to screen for heartworm and tick diseases such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. Fortunately, most parasites and parasite illnesses are easily preventable with safe and effective products and treatable, in many instances, if diagnosed in the early stages. Dr. Luka will be happy to discuss parasite preventative options with you so that you can choose a product that is most suitable for you and your pet’s lifestyle.

Prevention is a healthier, less expensive way to keep your pet healthy and safe from the many parasites they are likely to encounter. Keeping your pet on a full-year preventative plan will help give you peace of mind that they are protected from parasites all year long.

June 4th is the national Hug Your Cat Day

It is National Hug Your Cat Day! Show your purring, cuddly friend some love today in honor of the occasion.

In Ancient Egypt, cats were revered and even worshipped as symbols of grace and poise. National Hug Your Cat Day is the perfect opportunity to put your cat on a pedestal and thank her for all those times she has curled up next to you after a long day.

Did you know that showing your furry friend some affection is healthy for you? Studies have shown that hugs from animals can lower blood pressure and decrease stress.

When National Hug Your Cat Day rolls around each year on June 4th, the perfect opportunity presents itself for some snuggle time. Depending on your feline critter’s nature, hugging may not be in the cards. However, like most animals, touch is a vital part of communication – and the same goes for the claw-full kind.
